Neoma is a local-first note-taking and research notebook built around plain Markdown files stored on the user's device. It suits people who want connected knowledge without depending on constant internet access, including researchers and learners working with notes, PDFs, mathematics, calendars, and study material. The web app is open source under AGPL-3.0-or-later, while desktop editions are available for macOS, Windows, and Linux. An iOS app is also offered as a public beta, alongside browser access.
The published plans cover personal use, commercial teams, and larger institutions. Personal is free in AUD and includes every feature, every platform, no account, no limits, and no expiry. Team costs AUD 22 per user per month and is intended for firms, labs, clinics, and practices; it adds invoicing, a compliance pack, and priority support. Institutional costs AUD 4,500 per site per year and covers a faculty, hospital, or department with one site licence, no seat counting, and written answers to security questionnaires. This structure makes the free personal tier unusually broad, while giving organisations defined licensing options.
Its feature set reaches well beyond basic text capture. Wiki-links, backlinks, and a live graph view support linked-note workflows; daily notes, calendars, and .ics import add time-based organisation; and task lists, tags, and slash commands support structured work. Inline PDF reading, KaTeX mathematics, and spaced-repetition flashcards make Neoma particularly suited to research and study notebooks. Choose it if Markdown ownership, offline operation, and built-in study tools matter most. Consider an alternative if you specifically need a mature mobile release, or if your priority is a different platform model than Neoma's mix of local-first storage and edition-specific licensing.
