Narrative review
A focused cross-device writing workspace with offline access and manuscript exports.

Narrative is a distraction-free writing app for novelists, short-story writers, poets, essayists and other long-form writers. Its editor includes focus mode, dark mode and customizable fonts, while word-count goals and writing statistics help writers track progress. Project and chapter notes, proofreading suggestions and automatic version snapshots add support around the core drafting experience. The app is aimed at solo and small writing workflows rather than collaborative teams.
Cross-device access is a central part of Narrative’s offering. It runs on the web, Windows, macOS, iOS and Android, with real-time cloud synchronization across supported devices. Offline writing is available, with synchronization after reconnecting. Writers can import DOCX and TXT files, then export manuscripts as DOCX, TXT or EPUB. Optional backups through Dropbox and Google Drive extend the storage workflow, making Narrative a practical fit for writers who move between desktop and mobile devices or want a path from drafting to manuscript delivery.
Narrative uses paid Monthly and Annual plans and includes a 14-day free trial without a free plan. The subscription model suits writers who want ongoing access across supported platforms and devices, but it is less suitable for occasional users seeking a permanently free tool. There are also clear boundaries: Narrative does not provide collaboration features or AI features. Choose it for focused individual drafting, offline access, writing targets and standard manuscript formats. Teams writing together or users seeking shared editing and AI-assisted composition should look for a different writing app.
