mymesh is an open-source Python toolkit for generating, manipulating, and analyzing meshes, with a focus on implicit-function and image-based meshing. Originally developed to support research at Boston University's Skeletal Mechanobiology and Biomechanics Lab, it is aimed at technical users working with geometry and mesh workflows. It is a programming library, not a conventional 3D modeling application, so it suits people comfortable incorporating tools into code rather than those seeking an interactive modeling environment.

Its feature set centers on mesh construction and analysis. The toolkit includes geometric and curvature analysis, Boolean intersection, union, and difference, plus sweep construction through extrusion and revolution. It also supports point-set, mesh, and image registration; mesh quality evaluation and improvement; and type conversion, including volume-to-surface and element conversion. That combination makes it relevant to specialized geometry processing, particularly where implicit or image-based meshing is central. It is available for Linux, Windows, and macOS, and is self-hosted.

The project is open source and has a free plan, which makes it accessible for individual research and organizational workflows without a listed paid tier to compare. The tradeoff is its narrow role: mymesh does not provide sculpting or animation tools, and its library format means it is not a substitute for a full desktop modeling application. Choose it for programmable mesh generation, transformation, and analysis; choose another product if you need an all-purpose visual modeling workflow or animation features.

mymesh pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Supports implicit-function and image-based meshing
    • Includes Boolean operations, sweep construction, and registration
    • Provides curvature analysis and mesh quality evaluation and improvement
  • Where it doesn't
    • Requires Python-based workflows rather than a standalone modeling interface
    • Focuses on mesh operations rather than sculpting or animation
    • Its specialized scope may not suit general-purpose 3D modeling
