Mutt is a free, open-source, text-based email client for people who want direct control over mailboxes, messages and keyboard-driven workflows. It supports Linux, macOS, Windows, FreeBSD, NetBSD and OpenBSD, with POP3, IMAP and SMTP for receiving and sending mail. Its feature set suits users who are comfortable configuring accounts, folders and keybindings rather than looking for a graphical inbox with guided setup.

Mutt’s strongest area is depth within terminal email management. It supports MIME attachments, PGP/MIME, message threading and mailing-list workflows such as list-reply. Users can work with multiple mailbox formats, including mbox, MMDF, MH and Maildir, while header and body caching can support frequently accessed mail. Configurable macros, regular-expression searches and pattern-language searches add control for people who manage messages through repeatable commands. Postponed composition also lets users recall unfinished messages later.

The trade-off is a narrow, technical workflow. Mutt is primarily available as source code and operating-system packages, including packages for Linux, BSD and Windows via Cygwin, so its installation path is better suited to users comfortable with their operating system. Its listed capabilities concentrate on email transport, message organization, mailing lists and mailbox configuration rather than calendar workflows or a unified inbox. Choose Mutt if protocol support, keyboard control, scripting-style customization and open-source distribution matter most. Choose another client if you want a graphical interface, integrated calendar features or a more guided onboarding experience.
