Muster is render-farm management software for film, games and visual-effects studios that need to coordinate distributed 2D and 3D rendering on their own infrastructure. Its Dispatcher service coordinates render-client services on farm nodes, while the Console handles jobs and hosts. Cross-platform support spans Windows, macOS and Linux, and the vendor describes support for applications and engines including 3ds Max, After Effects, Blender, Cinema 4D, Houdini, Maya, Nuke, Arnold, Redshift, V-Ray, RenderMan and Octane. The free license covers up to four rendering hosts, making it a way to evaluate a small farm before considering a paid license.

The published prices are one-time purchases rather than monthly rendering-service fees. A Single instance license costs $85 and includes three months of maintenance. The Unlimited nodes license costs $2,499, is limited to a single site, and also includes three months of maintenance. The vendor additionally lists an unlimited-nodes license bundled with 15 months of support and maintenance, plus a maintenance extension that extends support and maintenance for 12 months; prices for those options are not stated here. That makes the entry license accessible, but scaling to an unlimited-node license is a substantial upfront commitment. Studios should compare the license scope and ongoing maintenance needs before choosing a tier.

Muster’s strongest fit is a studio that needs detailed queue and host controls: jobs can be organized hierarchically with dependencies, hosts can be monitored and remotely controlled, and operators can shut down or wake machines. Render logs, configurable error and warning reporting, an OpenEXR-capable image-sequence viewer and frame slicing cover practical farm workflows. Python-based templates, scripting and API bindings add room for custom processes, while the integrated web server enables browser and mobile access. LDAP and Active Directory integration, along with MySQL and Microsoft SQL Server support, helps it fit established studio environments. Studios seeking a hosted rendering service rather than self-hosted farm management, or those unwilling to commit to a sizable unlimited-node purchase, should look elsewhere.

Muster pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Organizes jobs, dependencies and hosts across a render farm
    • Frame slicing can distribute one image across multiple machines
    • Python scripting, API bindings, LDAP and Active Directory integration
  • Where it doesn't
    • Unlimited nodes cost $2,499 as a one-time license
    • The free license is limited to four rendering hosts
    • On-premises management may not suit studios seeking a hosted render service
