mpv-android is an open-source video player for Android devices, based on libmpv. It is aimed at viewers who want more control than a basic mobile player provides, including hardware and software decoding, gesture-based seeking, volume and brightness controls, keyboard input, and support for Android TV. It supports H.264, HEVC, MPEG-4, MPEG-2 Video, VP8, VP9, and AV1, with SRT and ASS subtitle formats.

Its strongest area is playback customization. Styled subtitle rendering through libass supports ASS presentation, while secondary or dual subtitle tracks suit viewers who need multiple subtitle layers. Advanced rendering settings include scalers, debanding, and interpolation, giving technically minded Android users more control over image processing. Network stream playback is available through Open URL, and background playback plus Picture-in-Picture support make it practical for listening or multitasking. Hardware acceleration is supported alongside software decoding.

mpv-android is free and open source, with MIT licensing and Android APK builds for multiple processor architectures. Distribution through F-Droid or manually installed APKs fits users comfortable choosing their installation method, while Android-only support limits its role for households or teams seeking one player across desktop and mobile platforms. Choose it for configurable local and network playback, subtitle control, and advanced rendering on Android. Choose an alternative if cross-platform availability or a simpler, less configurable playback experience is the priority.
