Mp3tag is a desktop application for editing metadata in music and other audio files. It is aimed at musicians, DJs, podcasters and audio enthusiasts who manage local libraries and need to process many files together. Core tasks include batch tag editing, embedded cover art, filename renaming, playlist creation, tag import and export, and online lookups from several music databases. Windows and macOS are the supported platforms, with deployment centered on desktop use.

Pricing is split by operating system. The Windows Freeware plan provides batch metadata editing, MusicBrainz and Discogs lookups, and cover-art support at no charge. The Mac plan is sold separately through the Mac App Store and adds batch tag editing, embedded cover-art editing, MusicBrainz and Discogs lookups, plus file renaming from tags. This structure makes Windows a straightforward choice for free library maintenance, while Mac users need to account for a separate purchase before using the desktop edition.

Its strongest depth is in repeatable batch work. Users can replace text in tags and filenames with regular expressions, create reusable action groups for multi-step edits, rename files from tag information, and batch-import or export cover art. MusicBrainz, Discogs, freedb and gnudb provide multiple lookup routes when enriching a collection. Pick Mp3tag if your workflow is desktop-based and depends on detailed, repeatable changes across local files. Choose another category option if you need mobile or browser access, or if buying a separate Mac edition does not fit your platform plans.

    • Reusable action groups, playlists, imports and exports
  • Where it doesn't

    • Mac edition is a separate paid application
    • Platform editions organize supported formats differently
