MilkyTracker is a free, open-source tracker application for creating MOD and XM music module files. It is designed for tracker musicians, chiptune creators and people working with classic module formats. Its workflow is pattern-based rather than centered on a conventional multitrack timeline, and it recreates the playback behavior of Fasttracker II with ProTracker compatibility modes for MOD files. Windows, macOS and Linux builds give it broad desktop coverage, while additional platforms and source builds are also supported.

Its strongest area is the depth of its tracker-focused toolset. MilkyTracker can create and export MOD and XM files, import more than 30 tracker module formats, and edit samples with waveform generators and effects. The instrument editor adds envelopes and sample management, while multiple resampling modes include Amiga emulation. Songs and patterns can be rendered to WAV, and basic MIDI input is available. These features make it a practical fit for creators who value classic module workflows, format compatibility and detailed control over samples and instruments.

The trade-off is a narrow ecosystem and production scope. MilkyTracker does not provide third-party plug-in support, MIDI sequencing or cloud collaboration, so it is less suited to users who need an extensible modern studio, networked editing or a broader sequencing environment. It also does not document video synchronization or noise reduction. Choose MilkyTracker when pattern-based composition, MOD/XM work and retro playback behavior are central requirements. Choose an alternative when plug-ins, full MIDI sequencing, collaborative workflows or broader audio-production features matter more than tracker authenticity.
