Microsoft Document Translator is an open-source Windows application and command-line tool for translating local files through Azure Translator. It is designed for small, mid-market and enterprise teams handling Office documents and other supported formats, especially when batch processing, multiple target languages or workflow automation matter. The Windows interface supports graphical file translation, while the command-line utility runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.

The local application is free and MIT-licensed, but the translation workflow depends on Azure services. Azure F0 includes 2 million characters of standard translation and custom translation training free per month. Azure S1 bills document translation per million characters and image document translation per thousand images. Document translation requires a paid S1-or-higher Translator tier, along with an Azure subscription, Translator resource and Azure Blob Storage. Azure Translator, Blob Storage, Key Vault and Custom Translator provide the surrounding service fit, while Key Vault credential management and sovereign-cloud support address Azure-focused operational requirements.

Its strongest feature set is document-oriented batch processing: supported inputs include Office, HTML, PDF, Markdown, MHTML, Outlook MSG, XLIFF, CSV, TSV and plain text, with up to 1,000 files handled in one operation. Custom glossaries and Custom Translator categories add terminology and model customization options. The trade-off is a focused Azure workflow rather than a broader website localization product. Teams needing website translation or translation memory should consider another tool, while organizations already working in Azure and needing local-file automation are the clearest fit.
