melonJS review
A JavaScript-first engine for browser games, with 2D/3D rendering and Tiled support.

melonJS is an open-source JavaScript game engine for indie developers and small teams making HTML5 games. Its browser-first scope suits developers who want to build with JavaScript or TypeScript and ship to modern browsers, including mobile browsers. Rendering spans WebGPU, WebGL 2, and Canvas2D fallback, while scenes can include 2D and 3D content, including glTF and GLB assets. The engine is free under the MIT License, and developers can install it as an ES module through npm or load it from a CDN.
Its feature set covers much of the work involved in a 2D browser game: Tiled map integration, polygon collision physics, Web Audio with 3D spatial sound, and input for mouse, touch, keyboard, gamepad, and accelerometer. UI, tweens, transitions, particle effects, and plugins extend that base. Matter.js and Planck.js are among the listed physics adapters; Spine is also an integration. That combination gives teams room to bring in familiar tools without changing the web delivery model. Support is described through documentation and community channels, which fits an open-source project but is a different support arrangement from a product with a stated dedicated support service.
The key trade-off is platform reach. The core targets web browsers; mobile use is supported through compatible mobile browsers, while native mobile packaging is available through an official Capacitor plugin. That makes Capacitor relevant for teams that want a wrapped mobile app, but melonJS does not offer console export, visual scripting, or built-in multiplayer tools. Choose it for a JavaScript-led browser game where web rendering, maps, and input breadth matter. Teams prioritizing console releases, visual authoring, or built-in multiplayer should look for an engine centered on those needs.
melonJS pros and cons
- Where it wins
- WebGPU and WebGL 2 rendering with Canvas2D fallback
- Tiled integration plus built-in polygon collision physics
- Broad input, Web Audio, UI tools, and plugin support
- Where it doesn't
- Core target is web browsers, not desktop or console exports
- No visual scripting or built-in multiplayer tools
- Native mobile packaging requires the Capacitor plugin
