meli is a free, open-source terminal email client for Linux and macOS, with additional BSD support described by the project. It is aimed at technical users who want to manage multiple accounts while choosing among Maildir, mbox, notmuch, IMAP, JMAP, and NNTP/Usenet backends. SMTP submission covers outgoing mail, while threading, configurable keyboard shortcuts, theming, and attachment handling round out its desktop email capabilities. HTML attachments can be rendered through an external filter, and GPG supports signing, encryption, and signature verification.

The main strength is breadth for users whose mail setup extends beyond a standard IMAP account. meli connects with IMAP, JMAP, SMTP, local Maildir and mbox stores, notmuch, NNTP/Usenet, and GPG. Multiple account support makes it suitable for separating personal, work, or project mail within one client. Optional SQLite index search can improve retrieval for users who want indexed searching, while keyboard shortcuts and theming allow the interface to fit a terminal-centered workflow. Distribution through package managers, Cargo, and source builds gives technically inclined users several installation paths.

Its focus is narrower than a full personal information manager. meli does not provide a unified inbox, scheduled sending, or calendar tools, and the listed desktop platforms are Linux and macOS. Offline access is not established as a core capability here, so users prioritizing a polished offline-first experience should consider another client. Choose meli if backend flexibility, open-source availability, terminal operation, and GPG features matter most. Choose an alternative if you need broader platform coverage, integrated calendar functions, scheduled messages, or one combined inbox across accounts.
