Marian NMT is an open-source neural machine translation framework written in pure C++. It is designed for researchers, organizations, and companies that build or operate custom machine translation systems rather than use a hosted translation service. The toolkit supports both training and decoding, with CPU and GPU translation, deep RNN and Transformer architectures, multi-source models, and SentencePiece-based text processing. Windows, Linux, API, and self-hosted deployment options support developer-led implementation.

Its strongest area is model development. Marian NMT provides fast multi-GPU training, model scoring, n-best-list rescoring, vocabulary creation, and a developer API. A web-socket translation server adds a deployment path for systems that need to expose translation capabilities to other software. The pure C++ implementation and support for multiple neural architectures make it suitable for teams that need control over training, decoding, and model operation.

The trade-off is focus. Marian NMT centers on the translation engine and its surrounding developer workflow, not on end-user localization operations. It does not provide document translation, website translation, translation memory, or glossary tools. Deployment also involves local compilation rather than a hosted interface, so it suits teams with the technical capacity to manage their own translation systems. Choose Marian NMT for custom model training, CPU or GPU translation, and API-based integration; choose a broader translation platform when document, website, memory, or glossary workflows are central.
