MailKite Server is an AGPL-3.0, self-hosted email server for applications and AI agents. It combines a Haraka-based SMTP MX edge, authenticated SMTP submission, an IMAP4 server, a REST API, signed inbound webhooks, outbound smarthost delivery, and a web console. The product fits developers and infrastructure teams that need inbound email handling under their control rather than a hosted-only service.

Its strongest area is infrastructure breadth. Inbound SMTP includes anti-open-relay recipient checks, while authenticated submission supports ports 587 and 465. IMAP4 is available with implicit TLS on port 993, and the REST API supports sending and message access. Signed inbound webhooks include retries, giving applications an event-driven path for processing messages. Rule-based routes cover webhooks, forwarding, and AI-agent handling. Together, these components make MailKite Server more than an SMTP endpoint: it provides several ways to receive, inspect, route, and act on email.

Deployment flexibility is another practical advantage. The stack runs on Node.js hosts and supports Docker, systemd, Fly.io, and Railway. A SQLite reference backend has zero npm dependencies, and the web console manages domains, DNS records, messages, routes, webhooks, and credentials. Outbound mail still goes through an SMTP relay, so teams seeking direct delivery infrastructure may need a different architecture. Those wanting hosted backend and deliverability services should look to MailKite Cloud instead. MailKite Server is the better fit for teams comfortable operating their own mail layer and wanting open-source control over inbound workflows.

MailKite Server pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Inbound SMTP, IMAP4, REST access, and signed webhook delivery
    • Self-hosted open-source stack with Docker, systemd, Fly.io, and Railway
    • Web console covers domains, DNS records, routes, messages, and credentials
  • Where it doesn't
    • Outbound delivery depends on an SMTP smarthost or relay
    • Self-hosting requires responsibility for deployment and operations
    • Rule-based routing may be less flexible than custom application workflows
