MailHog is an open-source email testing tool for developers working in development and test environments. Applications send messages to its local SMTP server, while teams inspect plain-text, HTML, and source content through a web interface. The HTTP JSON API adds programmatic access for listing, retrieving, deleting, and downloading messages. MailHog is available for web, macOS, Linux, API, and self-hosted use, with Docker and package-manager options alongside platform binaries.

Its strongest fit is flexible message handling. MailHog can release selected messages to real SMTP servers, supports multipart MIME and MIME-part downloads, and provides real-time updates through EventSource. SMTP AUTH and PIPELINING support help it fit into applications that require those SMTP behaviors. Storage can remain in memory or use MongoDB or maildir, while HTTP Basic Authentication is available for the web interface and API. SMTP, MongoDB, and Docker integrations support common self-hosted development setups.

MailHog is narrower than email testing platforms built around inbox previews and quality checks. It does not provide verified rendering, spam, accessibility, or link checks, so teams evaluating how messages appear across email clients or checking content quality will need a different tool or additional testing systems. Its Chaos Monkey feature supports failure testing, but the product remains centered on local SMTP capture, inspection, storage, and controlled release rather than production delivery. Choose MailHog when open-source deployment, API access, and storage control matter most; choose another product when rendering, spam, accessibility, or link validation is central.
