Lumen Player is an open-source desktop media player for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It is aimed at users who want more than basic playback, particularly those working with varied codecs, high-resolution video, subtitles, local media libraries, and network sources. FFmpeg-based playback covers formats including HEVC, AV1, VP9, ProRes, DNxHD, H.264, MP3, FLAC, WAV, AAC, OGG, Opus, ALAC, M4A, WMA, AIFF, and DSD. Hardware acceleration supports 4K playback, while JavaScript plugins add an extension point for customization.
Pricing is organized around one-time licenses. Personal costs $19 and includes every format and codec, AI subtitles and upscaling, and 1 year of updates. Pro costs $39 and adds cloud-synced playback, priority support, and 2 years of updates. Lifetime costs $79 and includes everything in Pro, plus lifetime updates and all future features. Windows, macOS, and Linux are included with every license, so the main choice is between update coverage and the additional Pro features rather than platform access.
Its strongest fit is a desktop-centered media setup that combines local playback with Plex, Jellyfin, DLNA, SMB, or NFS streaming. AI subtitle generation in 99 languages, GPU-accelerated 4K upscaling, and RNNoise voice isolation give it a wider feature range than a basic player, while optional encrypted cloud-synced playback supports continuity across devices. Users seeking a free player should choose an alternative, and the product’s v1.0 public beta designation may make it less suitable for those who prioritize a mature release over breadth of features.
Lumen Player pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Broad FFmpeg playback with hardware-decoded 4K HEVC support
- AI subtitles in 99 languages, upscaling, and voice isolation
- Plex, Jellyfin, DLNA, SMB, and NFS streaming across three platforms
- Where it doesn't
- No free plan; licenses start at a $19 one-time purchase
- The public v1.0 beta status may not suit users seeking a mature release
- Cloud-synced playback is available only with the Pro and Lifetime plans
