LITIENGINE review
A focused Java engine for 2D desktop games, with map editing and no license fee.

LITIENGINE is a Java-based 2D game engine and framework for tile-based games. It pairs a Java library for game infrastructure with utiLITI, an optional project-management tool and visual map editor. Its feature set suits solo developers and small teams working on 2D desktop games who want to build in Java, rather than use a general-purpose engine for several game dimensions or deployment targets. The engine is MIT-licensed and can be used for commercial games.
The core toolkit spans 2D rendering for environments, sprites, images, shapes, and text; physics and collision handling; positional audio and background music; and an entity framework with events, triggers, and controllers. Particle effects, user-interface systems, a game loop, resource management, configuration, and logging round it out. For maps, it supports TMX import and editing, and integrates with Tiled Map Editor. Steamworks4j is also listed as an integration. These tools make the engine a fit for Java projects centered on tile maps and 2D systems, while the editor should not be mistaken for node-based visual scripting: game logic is written in Java.
LITIENGINE packages standalone games for Windows, Linux, and macOS, and its deployment focus is desktop. Mobile and console export are not supported, so teams that need those targets should choose an engine with those export options. Multiplayer or networked development is possible through general Java networking libraries, but there is no built-in multiplayer service. The product is free and open-source, so there are no paid tiers to weigh; support channels are community and documentation. Choose LITIENGINE for a free Java workflow with 2D game infrastructure and map editing. Look elsewhere if you need mobile or console deployment, visual scripting, or a built-in multiplayer service.
