LinguaCafe is a free, open-source, self-hosted web application for language learners who build vocabulary through reading. It supports plain text, text files, e-books, YouTube subtitles, subtitle files, Jellyfin external subtitles, and webpages, giving learners several ways to bring their own material into a study workflow. Readers can look up words and phrases, save and edit vocabulary, review with spaced repetition, export cards to Anki, and track daily reading, highlighting, and review goals. Browser-based text-to-speech is available on reading and review pages, while Progressive Web App support enables fullscreen mobile use.
Its strongest fit is the combination of content import and vocabulary review. Learners can move from unfamiliar words in a text to dictionary lookup, saved vocabulary, and scheduled review without limiting study to a single content source. The integration set extends that workflow: Anki supports external flashcard review, Jellyfin connects subtitle-based learning with a media library, and DeepL and LibreTranslate provide translation options. This makes LinguaCafe particularly suitable for independent learners who already have books, subtitles, transcripts, or webpages they want to study.
The trade-off is that LinguaCafe is focused on browser-based, self-hosted reading rather than a broad device ecosystem or offline app experience. Deployment and ongoing hosting are part of the product model, and the available experience is limited to web access, including its PWA format for mobile use. Choose LinguaCafe if control over learning content, open-source software, and vocabulary-centered reading matter most. A different language app is likely a better fit for learners who want native desktop or mobile applications, offline study, or a managed service instead of self-hosting.
