LightWave 3D is desktop software for 3D modeling, animation, rendering and visual effects. It is aimed at artists working across film, television, design, architecture, gaming and visualization. Its workflow separates Modeler for object creation from Layout for staging, animation and rendering. Character-focused tools include rigging, biped animation, facial morphs and Motion Capture import through BioVision BVH. The package also covers lighting, shading and final rendering, making it suited to established teams that want a broad desktop production environment rather than a narrowly focused character tool.

Pricing is centered on perpetual licenses rather than a recurring subscription. The New LightWave 2025 Licence costs £795 one-time for first-time users, education-to-commercial users or additional licenses. Owners of a full LightWave 2024 license can upgrade for £450 one-time, while owners of LightWave 2023 or earlier can upgrade for £550 one-time. A 30-day trial is available. The education license is restricted to students and educators, so it is not a general free plan. The cost makes LightWave a more deliberate purchase for individuals, while the upgrade options are more relevant to existing users maintaining a LightWave workflow.

Its strongest case is breadth within character and procedural animation: rule-based controls, procedural geometry nodes, flocking, Bullet-based physics and rendering sit alongside rigging and facial animation. Integrations and interchange include Unreal Engine, ZBrush, FBX and COLLADA. The trade-off is platform scope: LightWave runs on Windows and macOS, and the separate Modeler and Layout workflow may not suit teams seeking a single unified workspace. Choose it for established desktop pipelines that need character, procedural, dynamics and rendering tools together; choose an alternative if broad platform coverage or a lower-cost entry point matters more.

    • Character rigs, biped animation, facial morphs and mocap import
    • Procedural controls, geometry nodes, flocking and Bullet physics
    • Supports Unreal Engine, ZBrush, FBX and COLLADA workflows
  • Where it doesn't
    • £795 one-time entry price is high for first-time users
    • Limited to Windows and macOS
    • Modeler and Layout create a split application workflow
