LibrePCB is a free, open-source electronic design automation suite for drawing schematics and designing printed circuit boards. It is aimed at makers, students, and professionals, from beginners to experts. The desktop application runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, works offline without an online account, and includes schematic and board editors, library management, production-data export, and command-line automation. Its source code is published under the GPLv3 license.

The pricing model is straightforward: LibrePCB is free and open source, with no paid tiers described. The platform fit is equally broad for desktop users, since the application supports Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its feature set covers multi-page schematic editing, live electrical rule checking, automatic schematic-to-board synchronization, assembly variants, alternate manufacturer part numbers, and an integrated library manager for installing and updating libraries. That makes it suitable for projects that need a connected schematic-to-board workflow without an online account.

For manufacturing and mechanical handoff, LibrePCB exports Gerber and Excellon production data, pick-and-place CSV, Gerber X3, and 3D STEP files for mechanical CAD. Headless output jobs through the command-line interface add an automation path for repeatable production outputs. The documented scope is centered on schematic capture, PCB layout, libraries, manufacturing exports, and mechanical CAD exchange; simulation and panel design are not part of that stated scope. Choose LibrePCB when a free, cross-platform desktop workflow and open-source access are priorities. Consider a different tool when simulation, panel design, or a broader integrated environment is central to the project.

LibrePCB pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Multi-page schematics with live electrical rule checking
    • Automatic schematic-to-board synchronization and library management
    • Gerber, pick-and-place, STEP, and headless CLI exports
  • Where it doesn't
    • Desktop software only, with no browser deployment
    • Its documented focus is PCB design rather than simulation
    • Panel design is outside its documented feature set
