LearnEnglish Sounds Right review
A focused mobile reference for hearing English phonemes, not a full language course.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
LearnEnglish Sounds Right is a pronunciation chart app from the British Council for English learners and teachers. Its purpose is narrow: users tap phonemic symbols to hear sounds and can play three example words associated with a sound. That makes it a practical reference for learners working on recognizing individual sounds, and a classroom aid for introducing phonemes and symbols. It is not structured as a broad English course, so learners seeking lessons across vocabulary, grammar or conversation should look for a different kind of app.
The chart's organization is central to its value. Vowels are arranged by mouth shape, diphthongs are grouped by their second sound, and consonants are arranged from the front to the back of the mouth and paired by voicing. These groupings help learners compare sounds rather than treating the symbols as an unconnected list. Audio and example words make the chart more useful than a static reference, while its phoneme-level scope means it does not offer accent feedback or AI conversation practice.
The app is free and available for iOS and Android, with mobile access suited to quick reference on a phone or tablet. The Apple App Store listing includes a British Council developer response from 2021 saying the app would be suspended soon; the listing remains available and shows a 2024 version update, while the vendor website and Google Play listing are also live. Choose Sounds Right if you want a compact sound chart for individual practice or teaching. Choose a broader English-learning app if your priority is guided study beyond pronunciation sounds.
