LAN Messenger review
A focused free chat tool for private LAN messaging, file transfer, and broadcasts.

LAN Messenger is a free, open-source desktop chat application for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It is designed for individuals and small teams that need private communication between computers on the same local network. Messages can be sent directly between users or broadcast to all or selected contacts, while file transfer, contact grouping, archived logs, and multilingual interface support cover common local messaging needs. The application operates without a dedicated server or internet connection, making its focus narrower than cloud-based team chat services.
Its strongest fit is a contained network where communication should stay local. AES encryption with RSA adds a security feature for messages exchanged within that environment, and archived logs provide a record of conversations. Broadcast messaging is useful for announcements, while selected-user broadcasts offer more control than sending every message to the entire network. Cross-platform availability also helps mixed desktop environments, provided participating users are on Windows, macOS, or Linux.
The trade-off is the LAN-only design. LAN Messenger does not provide internet-based collaboration, integrations, or a channel model for organizing larger communities and projects. It is therefore a practical choice for small local networks that prioritize serverless operation, direct communication, and file exchange. Teams that need cloud access, broader ecosystem connections, persistent online workspaces, or channel-based organization should choose a different team chat application.
