LÖVR is an open-source Lua framework for building 3D games, VR experiences, tools, prototypes, and educational projects. It is intended for developers who want direct access to VR capabilities without a commercial license, with projects made from code and assets that run through downloadable binaries or can be compiled from source. Its scripting options include Lua, LuaJIT, and Luau, while official builds target Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android.

VR functionality is the product’s clearest strength. LÖVR provides stereo rendering, headset and controller input, hand tracking, haptic feedback, spatialized audio, 3D rigid-body physics, passthrough, and foveated rendering. OpenXR and Vulkan support connect its rendering and hardware compatibility to established VR technologies, with SteamVR and Monado also listed among its integrations. For multiplayer prototypes, ENet-based networking is available, and standalone executable and APK distribution give developers practical paths to share desktop and Android builds.

The trade-off is focus. LÖVR is primarily designed for VR, so it suits immersive prototypes, experimental experiences, tools, and educational projects better than a general-purpose engine intended to cover many game formats. The published platform details include Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android, but flatscreen apps on mobile phones are not currently supported. Choose LÖVR when open-source access, Lua scripting, VR input, rendering, and rapid distribution matter most. Developers seeking a broader flatscreen workflow or wider platform coverage should consider a different engine.
