JSTOR is a digital research library for students, educators, independent researchers, libraries, and other institutions. Its collection spans academic journals, books, book chapters, research reports, theses, dissertations, documents, primary sources, images, audio, video, panoramas, and serials. Full-text search, citation export, Workspace organization, and text analysis support make it suited to research workflows that need more than a basic article search. Access can come through participating institutions, open content, or a personal plan.
Personal pricing is structured around three access levels. The Read only plan provides access to open content and public-domain articles, limited free reading of select items, and Workspace for saving and organizing research. The Monthly plan costs $19.50 per month and adds unlimited reading from 2,400+ academic journals, 10 PDF downloads per month, and Workspace. The Yearly plan costs $199 per year and includes the same journal access and Workspace, with 120 PDF downloads per year. Institutional access is also available through schools, libraries, museums, and other organizations, with pricing customized by institution and classification.
JSTOR’s strongest fit is for multidisciplinary research where journals are only one part of the evidence base. Advanced search supports filters for field, item type, date, language, publication, ISBN, and discipline, while citation tools and saved collections support ongoing projects. The trade-off is that personal plans impose PDF download limits, and the listed experience is web-based. Researchers who need broad scholarly content and primary sources should consider JSTOR; those seeking a platform beyond web access or a different download model may prefer an alternative.
