A format-rich desktop editor with free Linux editions and $49 Windows or Mac licenses.

JMathEdit is a visual desktop equation editor for mathematical expressions, chemical formulas, and scientific or educational equations. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, with categorized symbols and layout elements for matrices, fractions, roots, fences, and large operators. Solo users, educators, and small teams that prepare equations for documents or publishing can use its visual authoring tools instead of entering every structure manually.
Pricing is split by operating system. The JMathEdit2 Single User Windows Edition and Mac OS Edition each cost $49 as one-time electronic deliveries. The Linux Debian and Linux RPM editions are free. Windows users also get plugins for Microsoft Word and Adobe InDesign, giving the product a direct fit with those desktop publishing workflows. Its desktop deployment and operating-system-specific editions suit users who prefer installed software, while the separate Linux editions provide a no-cost route for Debian- or RPM-based systems.
The strongest capability is format flexibility. JMathEdit generates LaTeX and MathML live while typing, saves and loads XHTML with embedded MathML, and exports equations to SVG, PNG, RTF, EMF, EPS, and other formats. Font, size, spacing, color, theme, keyboard shortcuts, and clipboard behavior are customizable, with multi-level undo and redo supporting iterative editing. Choose JMathEdit when desktop authoring, broad export coverage, or Word and InDesign output matters. Users seeking browser-based editing, handwriting capture, or OCR-to-equation workflows should consider a different tool.
