Janus Gateway is an open-source WebRTC server from Meetecho for teams building custom real-time audio and video applications. Its core establishes WebRTC media communications, exchanges JSON messages, and relays RTP/RTCP between browsers and server-side application logic. The product is designed for Linux and macOS deployment and is particularly suited to developers who need control over media infrastructure rather than a hosted video service. Web clients are supported, while mobile SDKs are not part of the product fit.

Its main strength is breadth through plugins. VideoRoom provides publish/subscribe conferencing, while other capabilities cover live and prerecorded streaming, WebRTC session recording to MJR files, SIP gateway functions, audio bridging, and data-room use cases. The integration surface also includes REST and WebSocket APIs, plus RabbitMQ, MQTT, Nanomsg, and Unix socket transports. That combination gives engineering teams multiple ways to connect Janus with application logic and surrounding services. Teams choosing it should be prepared to shape the user experience and operating model around a media server rather than expecting a packaged conferencing application.

The trade-off is operational responsibility. Janus is software that users compile and operate themselves, and recording storage remains customer-managed. That makes it a fit for organizations with the engineering capacity to deploy, monitor, and integrate a WebRTC server, especially when a plugin-based architecture or protocol flexibility matters. It is a weaker choice for teams seeking managed hosting, built-in mobile SDKs, or an off-the-shelf video product with infrastructure handled for them. Janus is most compelling when customization and self-hosting are central requirements.

  • Where it doesn't
    • Requires users to compile, deploy, and operate the software themselves.
