ImplicitCAD review
A free, code-first CAD tool for parametric modeling and 3D-printing workflows.

ImplicitCAD is an open-source CAD tool for programmers, makers, and people creating models for 3D printing. Instead of relying on a conventional graphical interface, it represents geometry as code through the ExtOpenSCAD language or a Haskell API. Its scope covers both 2D and 3D work, with primitives such as cubes, spheres, cylinders, polygons, and circles, plus parametric variables, functions, mathematical transformations, and reusable abstractions.
The main strength is depth in programmatic and constructive modeling. Users can combine shapes with unions, intersections, and differences, then apply extrusions with configurable height, twist, scale, translation, and rounding. Rounded unions, bevels, shells, and other implicit-geometry operations extend that approach beyond basic primitives. The browser-based editor includes a WebGL preview, while exports include STL, OBJ, SVG, DXF, and selected 2D G-code. That combination makes ImplicitCAD a focused option for repeatable designs, computational geometry, and print-oriented output rather than an all-purpose visual modeling environment.
ImplicitCAD is free and open source, with no paid tier structure. The browser editor lowers the barrier to trying the workflow, while local installation is available through documented builds. Windows and macOS packages are not provided, which may make local setup less direct on those platforms. The programming-first model also means it is a poor fit for users seeking broad animation, sculpting, or conventional point-and-click CAD coverage. Choose it for code-driven parametric design, constructive solid geometry, and accessible export formats; choose a broader suite when visual sculpting or animation is central.
ImplicitCAD pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Code-based parametric modeling with reusable abstractions and transformations
- Constructive solid geometry supports unions, intersections, and differences
- Exports STL, OBJ, SVG, DXF, and selected 2D G-code
- Where it doesn't
- Programming-first workflow is less suited to conventional graphical CAD users
- Narrower coverage than suites with animation and sculpting tools
- Windows and macOS packages are not provided for local installation
