Impasto is a free, open-source raster painting and image editor for people who want a basic layered workspace on Linux, Windows or macOS. It includes layers and masks, editable text and shapes, paint tools, selections, adjustments, effects and undo history. Its focus is practical desktop editing rather than advanced color workflows, and it is suited to solo users or small teams looking for a no-cost alternative for straightforward image work.

For layered projects, Impasto uses OpenRaster to preserve layers and editable objects. It can open layered Photoshop PSD files, but PSD support is one-way: saving to PSD is not supported. Opening is limited to 8-bit RGB and grayscale documents, and the editor itself is limited to 8-bit color. That makes it a better fit for basic edits and painting than workflows that depend on PSD round-tripping or greater color depth. Grid, ruler, edge and center-line snapping help with alignment, while the add-in manager supports compatible Pinta add-ins for tools, effects and adjustments.

The platform choice is clear but narrow: Impasto is a desktop application, with no mobile, tablet or web version. Its open-source model and free availability make it worth considering for users who prioritize basic layered editing without a subscription. Choose another editor if your work requires saving PSD files, higher color depth, or access from a tablet or browser. For Mac users in particular, Impasto’s core appeal is a free local editor with familiar layer-based tools, provided its format and color limits fit the work.
