ideaBraid review
A local-first desktop mapper for turning ideas into structured project plans.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
ideaBraid is a desktop mind-mapping application for visual thinking, planning, and project management. It combines seven mind-map layouts with a free-form canvas, sticky notes, tables, task management, Board and Gantt views, dashboards, dependencies, reminders, and pitch presentation mode. Solo users who want local files and desktop coverage across macOS, Windows, and Linux are the clearest fit. The application requires no account and stores maps in its local .mind format.
Pricing is straightforward. The Reader plan is free forever and lets users open, zoom, search, and navigate maps, present them in pitch mode, and export PNG, PDF, Markdown, OPML, ICS, and CSV files without an account or limits. The Editor License costs $59 as a one-time purchase and adds full map editing, AI, the free-form canvas, Board, Gantt, Dashboard, and reminders. It includes one license for macOS, Windows, and Linux and one year of updates. The optional Updates renewal costs $39 per year and continues those updates. A 7-day full trial is followed by Reader mode if no license is entered.
The strongest distinction is the combination of local-first storage and planning depth. AI can provide work breakdowns and branch expansion through user-provided Anthropic or OpenAI keys or a local Ollama model, while exports include PNG, SVG, PDF, Markdown, OPML, ICS, and CSV. That makes ideaBraid suitable for individuals moving from brainstorming into structured project work without depending on an online account. Its desktop focus is also the main boundary: teams seeking built-in collaboration, or people who need mobile and web access, should choose a product centered on shared, cross-platform workspaces instead. For solo desktop planners, the Reader offers a low-commitment way to view and share maps, while the Editor adds the working features that turn them into plans.
