ICTFax REST API is an open-source fax server for businesses, developers, and service providers that need to send and receive faxes through software, email, or web workflows. Its REST APIs cover fax transmission, document handling, status tracking, and DID or extension management. The platform runs on infrastructure controlled by the deploying organization and supports web, Linux, API, Chrome extension, and self-hosted environments. It is particularly suited to teams building fax services or integrating fax into existing communications systems.

The Community Edition costs $0 and includes the open-source fax server, REST API support, email-to-fax, fax-to-email, web-to-fax, and self-hosted deployment. Its transport and gateway coverage is broad for a fax platform: T.38 and G.711 support, PSTN fax gateways, ATA devices, fax extensions, DID assignment and forwarding, activity reports, and transmission status tracking are all part of the feature set. The Service Provider Edition adds white-label support, multi-tenant support, and hosted fax service capabilities, making the edition split relevant for providers serving multiple organizations.

Its strongest fit is an organization that can manage infrastructure and wants control over fax routing, telephony connections, and API-based workflows. Integrations with FreeSWITCH, ICTCore, SIP trunks, T.38, G.711, PSTN gateways, and ATA devices support deployments that already use those components. The trade-off is operational responsibility: this is not positioned as a simple hosted fax inbox, and AI features are not included. Choose ICTFax REST API when self-hosting, extensibility, and service-provider functions matter; choose an alternative if you want a narrower, managed fax experience with less infrastructure involvement.

ICTFax REST API pros and cons

  • Where it doesn't
    • Self-hosted deployment requires organization-controlled infrastructure
    • AI features are not included
    • Advanced multi-tenant and white-label capabilities require the Service Provider Edition
