Iceshrimp is open-source, non-commercial social networking software for people who want to run or join an independent instance rather than rely on a central service. It uses ActivityPub for federation and offers a web interface plus a Mastodon-compatible API. The project fits people who value decentralized networks and can choose an existing instance or manage their own; it is less suited to someone looking for a single official service with a straightforward account signup or official mobile apps.

Its compatibility is a practical strength. The API works with clients including Elk, Phanpy, Enafore, Mastodon, Mona, Toot!, Tusky, Ivory, and Tusker, among others. People can also preview public profiles and posts. This gives users a choice of interfaces while keeping federation at the center of the product. However, client compatibility should not be confused with an official Iceshrimp mobile app: the project points to third-party iOS and Android clients.

Installation options include binary packages, Docker Compose, and manual installation, so instance operators can select an approach that fits their environment. The project also provides a migration path from Iceshrimp-JS to Iceshrimp.NET, but the current .NET codebase is beta and the project recommends caution before upgrading existing JS instances. Iceshrimp is therefore a stronger fit for people comfortable evaluating and operating community software than for those who want a stable, centrally managed platform with project-run hosting. Choose it for federation, self-hosting, and client choice; consider another service if you need an official instance or want to avoid beta migration concerns.

Iceshrimp pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • ActivityPub federation connects instances across a decentralized network.
    • Mastodon-compatible API supports a broad set of third-party clients.
    • Binary packages, Docker Compose, and manual installation are supported.
  • Where it doesn't
    • The project does not operate a flagship instance.
    • Iceshrimp.NET is beta, and upgrades from Iceshrimp-JS warrant caution.
    • Mobile access relies on compatible third-party clients, not official apps.
