Home Designer is desktop software for DIY homeowners and remodelers who need more than basic floor-plan drawing. It combines 2D floor-plan creation with 3D modeling, interior-design tools, terrain and site plans, automatic building tools, and construction-oriented documentation. Its feature set also covers kitchens, baths, roofs, framing, stairs, decks, and landscaping, making it suited to residential design and remodeling workflows that need drawings and visual context in the same application.

Pricing is offered as a monthly or annual subscription. The monthly Home Designer plan costs $79 per month, while the annual Home Designer plan costs $495 per year. Both plans include software upgrades, free catalog downloads, and technical support. The vendor also offers a trial, although its documented limits exclude saving, printing, exporting, and walkthrough video recording. That makes the trial useful for reviewing the interface and workflow, but not for completing or sharing a project. The paid plans are therefore the relevant options for users who need ongoing document production and file output.

The standout fit is construction documentation combined with visualization. Home Designer supports construction-document layout sheets, automatic and manual framing, automatic and manual dimensioning, cross-sections and elevations, materials lists, cost estimation, and real-time ray-trace rendering. DWG and DXF import and export support CAD-based workflows, while 3D walkthrough recording and interactive 3D Viewer model export add presentation options. It runs on Windows and macOS, with interactive models shared through Chief Architect’s cloud. Choose it when detailed residential documentation and desktop tools matter most; teams that require collaboration features should consider a different workflow.
