Harmony Assistant review
A desktop score editor with accompaniment, audio tools, tablature and MIDI/MusicXML support.

Harmony Assistant is desktop music notation and composition software for composers and arrangers who want score editing alongside accompaniment and audio tools. It offers page and engraver modes for working with scores, and can prepare instrument-specific views for performer parts. The software runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, making it an option for musicians who prefer desktop software across those operating systems.
Beyond notation, Harmony Assistant can generate automatic accompaniment and drum patterns, and includes a digital synthesizer with an instrument sound database. Musicians can record and edit audio tracks, enter notes with a MIDI keyboard, and import or export MIDI and MusicXML. Tablature editing, chord-diagram calculation, lyrics and MIDI Karaoke support extend its use to guitar arrangements, vocal material and playback-oriented work. This breadth makes it more than a score editor, though buyers seeking only basic notation may find the range of tools unnecessary.
The license is a one-time purchase for a given platform, with free updates for future versions. A trial download has no time limit, but unregistered use disables saving and limits printing; registration unlocks saving, printing and the full feature set. That gives prospective buyers room to evaluate the workflow before purchasing, while making the trial less suitable for completing or distributing finished scores. Composers who want accompaniment generation, audio editing and notation in one desktop application should consider it; those who need a free plan or an unrestricted evaluation should look elsewhere.
