Harfang 3D review
A multi-language 3D framework with an editor, physics, VR and build tools.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
Harfang 3D combines a C++ real-time 3D framework with Harfang Studio, an editor for scenes and animations. It is aimed at developers, designers and engineers creating interactive 3D, simulation, HMI, and VR/AR applications. The framework exposes APIs for C++, Python, Lua and Golang, and its node/component scene model can be embedded into existing systems. That breadth makes it relevant to teams that want to work across languages and build desktop applications without relying on cloud connectivity.
The feature set spans much of a real-time 3D production workflow: PBR and AAA rendering pipelines with user shaders, rigid-body physics and collision tools, 3D audio playback and spatialization, and VR through OpenVR/SteamVR and OpenXR. Harfang Studio manages assets, scenes and animations; FBX, GLTF and OBJ workflows cover asset exchange. Blender, Autodesk 3ds Max and Adobe Substance are listed integrations, alongside Visual Studio, Visual Studio Code, PyCharm and version-control tools. Command-line utilities support builds and continuous integration. Windows, Linux and macOS are listed platforms, with WebAssembly marked experimental. This is a broad toolkit for teams needing a framework and editor rather than a narrowly focused rendering library.
According to the vendor's licensing notes, the project is open source under GPLv3/LGPLv3, with a commercial license also available; commercial pricing appears to require contacting NWNC Harfang3D. The public release pages list version 3.2.7 (2023), so teams evaluating it should check whether its current release cadence and support channels—email, documentation and community—fit their project. Harfang 3D suits teams prioritizing language choice, desktop deployment and integrated 3D workflows. Those requiring established, verified recent release activity or non-experimental WebAssembly support should compare alternatives before committing.
