Halotools review
A free, research-focused Python toolkit for synthetic galaxies and halo-catalog statistics.

Halotools is an open-source Python package for astrophysical research on the galaxy–halo connection, cosmology and structure formation. It is aimed at researchers who need to generate synthetic galaxy populations from dark-matter halo catalogs, test galaxy-evolution models and calculate mock-observable statistics. Its model library covers halo occupation distribution, abundance matching and related approaches, while modular components support custom galaxy-evolution work.
The package is available at no cost as open source. Its core research workflow spans galaxy clustering, lensing, redshift-space distortions, pairwise velocities, void statistics and marked correlations. Researchers can use prebuilt or user-supplied halo catalogs, download publicly available catalogs, and reduce or cache simulation data in HDF5 files for faster loading. This breadth makes Halotools useful when a project needs both population modeling and downstream statistical analysis in one Python-oriented toolkit.
Halotools fits teams that are comfortable managing scientific Python environments and data locally. Distribution through conda-forge, pip and source builds gives projects several installation paths, while self-hosted deployment keeps catalog and simulation handling within the user’s workflow. Support is provided through documentation and email. The scope is deliberately research-specific rather than consumer-facing: it does not target augmented-reality sky views, telescope control or mission tracking. Choose Halotools for reproducible galaxy–halo simulations and catalog analysis; choose a general astronomy app instead for observational sky exploration or hardware control.
Halotools pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Generates synthetic galaxies with HOD and abundance-matching models
- Computes clustering, lensing and redshift-space distortion statistics
- Caches reduced halo catalogs as fast-loading HDF5 files
- Where it doesn't
- Specialized for galaxy–halo research rather than general sky viewing
- Self-hosted deployment puts environment and data management on the user
- Does not target AR, telescope control or mission tracking
