GroupMe is a free group messaging app for friends, families, schools, teams, clubs, and community groups. It combines group chats and direct messages with announcement groups, polls, events, calendars, photo sharing, reactions, pinned messages, and message search. Administrators can manage group links, join approvals, visibility, and membership controls. With web, Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and API access, it suits communities that want one shared space without a paid plan. Guest access and SMS participation also make it practical for groups with mixed levels of app access.

Its strongest fit is informal coordination rather than structured workplace communication. School groups, clubs, families, and community organizers can use announcements, events, polls, and calendars to keep conversations active and organized. Members can share photos and join through SMS when they do not have the app, while video calls are powered by Microsoft Teams. Integrations with Microsoft Teams, Facebook, Spotify, X, Instagram, and TikTok extend its connections beyond the core chat experience.

The main tradeoff is its narrower conversation model. GroupMe does not provide conventional channels, so organizations that need separate topic-based workspaces may prefer a channel-centered team chat app. Groups support up to 5,000 members, which covers many communities but sets a clear ceiling for larger audiences. GroupMe is a strong choice for free, social, school, and community messaging with lightweight coordination tools; it is less suitable for teams that need channel-based organization or a more formal collaboration structure.
