GROBID is an open-source machine-learning library for extracting and structuring information from scholarly PDFs. Researchers and teams working with technical or scientific publications can use it to parse bibliographic metadata, references, citation contexts, and article text into TEI XML. It is designed for user-managed deployment rather than a hosted subscription, making it a fit for groups able to incorporate and run document-processing software in their own environment.

Its depth in scholarly structure is the defining advantage. GROBID can extract titles, abstracts, authors, affiliations, keywords, funding information, and references, while recognizing citation contexts and linking them to references. It also structures full text into paragraphs and sections, with figures, tables, and footnotes; coordinates can be attached to extracted structures. REST web services and batch PDF processing support integration into document workflows, and Java and client libraries are available. Bibliographic consolidation can use Crossref or biblio-glutton, including the Crossref REST API.

The tradeoff is scope and operational responsibility. GROBID targets technical and scientific publications, so teams seeking broad extraction from arbitrary PDFs should consider a general-purpose alternative. It does not substantiate scanned-image OCR or form-field extraction, limiting its fit for image-only documents or forms. The project has documentation and community support, and is supported by INRIA and MESRE. Choose GROBID when structured scholarly content and self-hosting matter; look elsewhere when you need a hosted service or extraction beyond scholarly documents.

GROBID pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Structures metadata, references, citation contexts, and article full text
    • Returns TEI XML through REST services and supports batch processing
    • Can attach PDF coordinates and consolidate data with Crossref or biblio-glutton
  • Where it doesn't
    • Focused on technical and scientific publications, not general PDF extraction
    • Requires users to deploy and operate the software themselves
    • Does not substantiate scanned-image OCR or form-field extraction
