GrinTale review
A visual book-writing workspace with strong planning tools, but no collaboration or free plan.

GrinTale is a browser-based writing environment for novelists, essayists, academics, screenwriters, bloggers, and journalists working on books or other long-form texts. Projects can be organized into chapters, parts, and scenes, with drag-and-drop reordering for structural changes. Character and location cards hold images, notes, and relationships, while research materials and notes can stay alongside the manuscript. Because it runs in a modern browser and does not require installation, it suits writers who want a dedicated workspace without a desktop application. It is less suitable for teams that need shared editing or collaboration features.
Planning is GrinTale’s clearest strength. The visual corkboard lets writers arrange scenes and review the manuscript at a higher level, while the project mind map connects chapters, characters, locations, and ideas. The built-in encyclopedia, character sheets, story world tools, and project outline add further structure for complex projects. During drafting, Focus mode provides fullscreen writing, and daily word-count goals and statistics support a more deliberate writing routine. Snapshots and document versions give writers a way to preserve earlier states of a project, making the product a strong fit for visual planners and writers who want planning information close to the manuscript.
The published plan is GrinTale Pro at €128 per year, billed annually. It includes unlimited projects, the advanced editor and Focus mode, corkboard and project outline tools, snapshots and document versions, character sheets and story-world features, plus the mind map and built-in encyclopedia. A 15-day free trial is available, but there is no free plan. DOCX import includes automatic chapter detection, and finished work can be exported to PDF, DOCX, or EPUB, with automatic cloud synchronization. Choose GrinTale if visual planning and browser-based access matter more than team workflows; choose an alternative if collaboration or a free ongoing tier is essential.
