Google Messages review
A free Android messaging app that combines SMS, MMS and supported RCS with web access.

Google Messages brings SMS and MMS together with RCS chats on Android phones and tablets. It suits Android users who want those message types in one app, including people who exchange photos, videos, or group messages. RCS can send messages over Wi-Fi or mobile data when supported by the participants and their carriers. A paired computer browser or Android tablet can also access messages, so the service offers an option beyond the phone without a desktop app. Its focus is messaging rather than a broad calling suite.
The distinction between message types matters for privacy and features. Google Messages provides automatic end-to-end encryption for eligible RCS conversations between Google Messages users; that protection does not apply to SMS or MMS. RCS chats can include read receipts, typing indicators, and high-resolution photos and videos, while spam protection and group conversations are also listed features. RCS availability and some capabilities vary by carrier, region, and device, so the richer chat experience depends on whether the people in a conversation can use it. SMS and MMS remain part of the app, but they do not gain RCS encryption by being sent through Google Messages.
The app is free and supports Android and the web. The web experience depends on pairing with the mobile app, rather than a standalone desktop app, and the product’s listed platform scope is narrower than a cross-platform messaging service. Voice and video calling are not listed, so people choosing an alternative to WhatsApp primarily for calls should look elsewhere. Google Messages is a good fit for Android users who want traditional texting alongside supported RCS, browser access, and spam protection; it is less suited to people who need broad device coverage or calling in the same service.
