GetFont is a free, open-source browser extension for people who need to identify and refine typography on webpages. It shows the typeface and CSS properties applied to selected elements, inventories fonts across a page by family and usage, and lets users preview replacements without reloading. Its audience includes designers and developers inspecting live interfaces, comparing type choices, or preparing typography details for implementation.

The extension concentrates on practical browser inspection rather than image-based recognition. Users can adjust variable-font weight, width, slant, and optical-size axes, receive suggestions for similar typefaces, and apply alternatives live. Typography can then be exported in CSS, Tailwind, SCSS, TypeScript, or JSON formats. Up to 200 recent inspections are stored locally, while operation does not require accounts, telemetry, analytics, or servers. The published pricing model is free, with no paid plan structure described.

GetFont runs as a Chrome extension in Chromium-based browsers. The project is distributed from GitHub, and current installation uses an unpacked extension while Chrome Web Store publication is pending, so onboarding requires browser extension setup beyond a normal store install. Support is community-based. This makes it a fit for users who value open-source inspection, local operation, and detailed control over rendered web fonts. Teams needing image-upload identification, cross-browser deployment, or a centrally managed support channel should choose a different tool.

GetFont pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Inspects rendered fonts, CSS properties, and page-wide font usage
    • Live font swaps, variable-axis controls, and alternative suggestions
    • Exports typography as CSS, Tailwind, SCSS, TypeScript, or JSON
  • Where it doesn't
    • Runs in Chromium-based browsers rather than across browser platforms
    • Installation currently requires an unpacked extension from GitHub
    • Does not identify fonts from uploaded images
