GeoTag Camera is a free, open-source Android camera for field surveyors, students and NGO teams. It captures GPS coordinates, altitude, accuracy, bearing and capture time in EXIF metadata, while burning addresses, coordinates, date/time and configurable fields into images. Photos stay local, and capture, stamping, signing and verification work offline. This suits solo and small field operations that need location-rich records without a network connection.

Its standout capability is the combination of on-device SHA-256 hashing, cryptographic photo signing and offline verification. The app can check whether image pixels and key location metadata changed after capture, giving teams a direct workflow for identifying tampering. Built-in address lookup includes a cached offline fallback, while optional map thumbnails and weather chips add context when those details are useful. Organization names and logos can also appear on stamps, with placement and fields configurable for different reporting needs.

GeoTag Camera keeps its scope on Android capture and evidence handling rather than a broad multi-platform ecosystem. Gallery grouping, multi-select sharing or deletion, map opening, tap-to-focus, exposure compensation, zoom and aspect-ratio controls cover practical field workflows. The trade-off is platform reach: Android-only deployment will not suit teams standardizing on other platforms, and community support may be insufficient for organizations requiring vendor channels. The project README identifies version 1.2.0 as a pre-release and requires Android 8.0 or newer. Choose it for offline, signed geotagged photography on supported Android devices; consider an alternative when cross-platform deployment or formal support is essential.

GeoTag Camera pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • On-device SHA-256 signing and offline tamper verification
    • GPS, address and configurable stamp data in images and EXIF
    • Offline capture with cached address lookup, maps and weather options
  • Where it doesn't
    • Android-only deployment limits cross-platform teams
    • Community support may not fit teams needing vendor channels
    • Version 1.2.0 is identified as a pre-release and needs Android 8.0+
