FreeCAD review
A broad, free parametric CAD desktop for technical design, engineering, and 3D printing.

FreeCAD is an open-source desktop 3D parametric modeler for designing real-world objects. It is suited to mechanical engineering, product design, architecture, prototyping, education, and 3D printing. Its core workflow combines editable design history with constraint-based 2D sketching and solid modeling, giving technical users a structured way to revise designs. The application runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux and supports CAD and mesh file formats.
Its strongest advantage is breadth within technical design. FreeCAD includes an assembly workbench with joints and simulation, technical drawing and view generation, finite element analysis, other engineering workbenches, and CAM/CNC support. These tools make it a practical fit for users who need more than shape creation, particularly when designs must move toward documentation, analysis, or manufacturing. Python scripting and extensible workbenches also provide room for customization beyond the core modeling workflow.
FreeCAD is distributed under open-source licensing, with no paid plan tiers to evaluate. Rendering is handled externally through the Render Workbench, and no integrations are listed, so its ecosystem fit is narrower than its modeling and engineering scope. Choose it when free, editable parametric CAD and technical workbenches matter most. An alternative may be more suitable for teams prioritizing built-in rendering or a broader integrated software ecosystem.
FreeCAD pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Free parametric modeling with editable design history
- Assembly, analysis, technical drawing, and CAM workbenches
- Runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux with Python extensibility
- Where it doesn't
- Rendering is external through the Render Workbench
- No listed integrations limit ecosystem breadth
- Desktop software rather than a browser-based modeling tool
