Forvo is a pronunciation dictionary and mobile app for listening to words and phrases spoken by native speakers. It suits language learners, educators, and teams that need to hear pronunciation variants across many languages. Users can search recordings, compare accents and locations, request missing entries, save favorites, download MP3s, and contribute or vote on pronunciations. Access is available through the web, iOS, Android, and the Forvo API.
The consumer service is free for personal use, while the paid plans apply to API access. The Non-Profit plan costs $2 per month and includes 500 requests per day, but commercial use is not allowed, Forvo attribution is required, and there is no SLA. Commercial Small Business costs $28.95 per month, allows commercial use, requires attribution, and has no SLA. Commercial Corporate allows commercial use, does not require attribution, and includes an SLA. This structure makes Forvo suitable for both individual reference and organizations embedding pronunciation access through the API.
Forvo’s main strength is breadth: its community model provides multiple recordings and accent comparisons instead of limiting learners to a single pronunciation. Requests for missing words and phrases, user contributions, favorites, and downloads add practical reference tools. However, it does not provide verified AI feedback, pronunciation scoring, or structured pronunciation training. Choose Forvo when authentic listening reference across many languages is the priority. Choose another language pronunciation app when learners need guided exercises, measurable practice, or automated correction.
