Folian is a local-first desktop writing workspace for authors developing novels, series, screenplays and other complex manuscripts. Its project combines chapters and scenes with a story bible, canon records for characters and locations, visual planning, research materials, creative decisions and revision rationale. Editing passes cover developmental, line, copy, pacing, dialogue and consistency work, while publishing preparation and manuscript export keep the project oriented toward a finished draft. Core writing functions work without AI, and projects are stored locally on the author's machine. The current release is a paid public beta for Mac.

Folian has one published plan: Public Beta costs $29 USD as a one-time payment. That plan includes the full manuscript workspace, story bible and canon tools, research and project material organization, decisions tracking, export capability and local-first storage. Optional AI assistance works through user-supplied provider keys, with OpenAI and Claude listed as integrations. This approach keeps AI optional while allowing authors to bring an existing provider relationship into the writing workflow; the product's central drafting and planning tools do not depend on it.

The strongest case for Folian is breadth within a single fiction project: connected visual planning, continuity management, research organization and revision passes sit beside the manuscript instead of in separate tools. It is suited to solo and small-team authors who want a desktop, local-first workflow and are comfortable with public-beta software. The trade-offs are clear: it runs on macOS, has no mobile apps, and Windows support remains in development. Authors who need mobile access, Windows compatibility or a non-beta environment should consider another writing application.

Folian pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Combines drafting, canon, research and revision tracking in one local project.
    • Connected visual planning and editing passes span developmental to consistency work.
    • The $29 one-time beta plan includes export and local-first project storage.
  • Where it doesn't
    • Available on macOS desktop; Windows support is still in development.
    • No mobile apps are offered.
    • AI assistance requires your own OpenAI or Claude provider key.
