Fission is a macOS audio editor for people who need to modify individual audio files quickly without re-encoding supported formats. Its focus is practical file-level work: trimming, cropping, cutting, fading, joining, normalization, metadata editing, chapter creation, and splitting recordings manually or by silence. Rogue Amoeba positions it for tasks such as podcast editing, removing commercials, and dividing LP recordings, making it a fit for concise edits rather than full production workflows.

The published plans show a $35 Fission License Key as a one-time purchase, unlocking the full version for a single user on one or more personally owned Macs. Owners of an older Fission version can purchase the Fission 2 Upgrade for $15 one time. A limited free trial is available, but Fission is not presented as a time-unlimited free plan. The pricing is easy to understand for individual Mac users, although the platform restriction makes the purchase unsuitable for Windows or other operating systems.

Fission’s strongest area is its concentrated set of file operations and format tools. It supports lossless editing for supported formats and batch conversion between MP3, AAC, Apple Lossless, FLAC, AIFF, and WAV. Metadata tools cover ID3 tags, lyrics, and artwork, while chapterized AAC and MP3 creation, cue sheet import and export, gain adjustment, and iPhone ringtone creation extend its usefulness beyond basic cutting. The trade-off is a narrow scope: Rogue Amoeba states that Fission does not support audio effects. Choose it for fast, focused Mac audio-file editing; choose another tool if effects or a broader production environment are central requirements.
