FilmCan review
A free macOS offload tool for verified, multi-drive media copies.

FilmCan is a free, open-source macOS application for backing up media from camera cards or folders to multiple drives in one pass. It is aimed at film and video crews, including DIT carts and production workflows that need local copies during ingest. The app runs on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs, keeps transfers local, and supports external-drive backup with a bring-your-own-storage model. It is a specialized media offload tool rather than a general cloud photo-backup service.
Its strongest area is transfer control and verification. FilmCan can copy one source to multiple destination drives in a single pass, check disk space and write access before copying, and verify copied data with xxHash128. Fast and Paranoid verification modes provide different checking approaches, while clean stop-and-resume operations help continue interrupted transfers without partial files. Custom folder templates, camera and sound auto-detection, manifests, and transfer history add useful structure for repeatable workflows. History records destination results, speed, and duration.
Production teams may also benefit from camera and sound routing for Netflix Ingest workflows, plus notifications through ntfy and webhooks. These capabilities make FilmCan a good fit for organized, local-first camera-card transfers where destination control and verification matter more than online storage. The trade-off is its narrow platform and workflow focus: it requires macOS 13 Ventura or later and does not serve as a broad cloud photo library or cross-platform backup service. Choose FilmCan for free, verified multi-drive copying on a Mac; choose another category of tool if you need cloud sync, mobile coverage, or a general-purpose photo backup system.
