FavTray is a macOS menu bar application that pairs developer utilities with a screenshot capture and annotation tool. It is aimed at Mac users who want to mark up a selected screen region, then copy the result or save it locally. The screenshot feature fits individual workflows rather than shared review: annotations can be added in place with a pen, highlighter, lines, arrows, rectangles, ellipses, and text in multiple sizes and colors. Undo and redo are available, and the selection can be moved or resized while retaining annotations.

The main distinction is the boundary between the free tools and the screenshot feature. According to the published plans, Free costs $0 and does not include screenshot annotation; Lifetime costs $4.99 one time and unlocks capture and annotation plus lifetime updates. The screenshot feature is also available during a 30-day trial. That makes the lifetime tier a low one-time cost for users who specifically need this capability, but the free plan should not be mistaken for a free screenshot markup tool. FavTray requires macOS 14 or later.

Local handling and a narrow workflow are the other key considerations. The vendor says captures are processed locally and not uploaded; finished images can be copied to the clipboard or saved to Desktop. That will suit users who want a simple desktop capture-and-markup step without screenshot uploads. The feature set does not include redaction or team collaboration, so it is less suited to sensitive review workflows that require hiding information or coordinating annotations with colleagues. Choose FavTray for individual Mac screenshot markup; look elsewhere if those collaborative or redaction needs are central.

  • Where it doesn't
    • Screenshot capture and annotation are not included in the Free plan
    • Requires macOS 14 or later
    • No redaction or team collaboration features
