Favilla is a self-hosted workspace and company intranet for teams that want internal operations tools on their own server. It brings together internal news, documents, projects, messaging, tasks, calendars, contacts, files and reports through a web application, API and installable PWA. The Team edition adds multi-user access, role-based permissions, Projects, Teams, Documents and Blog modules. Its GNU AGPL-3.0-or-later license makes it a fit for solo operators and small to mid-market organizations that prefer an open-source deployment model.

Breadth is Favilla’s defining strength. News supports scheduled publishing, categories, tags and moderated comments, while documents add versioning, approval workflows, expiry reminders and audit trails. Projects cover milestones, kanban and Gantt views, timesheets and budgets. Team messaging includes direct chats, groups, mentions, attachments and reactions, and shared calendars, tasks, contacts and file management extend the workspace beyond publishing. That range suits teams seeking one internal operations hub rather than a narrow announcement tool. Zapier, n8n and custom webhooks provide integration paths, with a REST API, personal access tokens and outgoing webhooks for further connections.

Control and deployment are central to the product. Favilla supports Docker, Apache and XAMPP, with role-based administration, OIDC single sign-on and TOTP two-factor authentication. The PWA and Web Push notifications extend access beyond a standard browser. The 2.4.0 release is feature-complete and frozen, while security updates, dependency updates and fixes continue. Favilla is a sensible choice for teams comfortable operating self-hosted software and assembling internal workflows from its modules. Organizations seeking a more complete intranet information architecture, especially with an employee directory or page builder, should consider another option.

Favilla pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Combines news, documents, projects, messaging, calendars and tasks
    • Includes OIDC SSO, TOTP two-factor authentication and role-based permissions
    • Offers REST API, webhooks and an installable PWA with push notifications
  • Where it doesn't
    • Self-hosted deployment requires organizations to run their own infrastructure
    • Support is centered on documentation
    • Its intranet scope does not establish an employee directory or page builder
