Faceware Portal review
Cloud tracking for prerecorded facial performance, with FWR and JSON exports.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
Faceware Portal processes prerecorded facial performance video in the cloud, through a web browser. Animation and production teams can upload a recording for automatic facial tracking, review a preview, and use the resulting animation data in downstream workflows. Its focus is facial performance rather than general body motion, making it a fit for teams whose source material is recorded facial video and whose pipeline can work with its exports.
Portal offers two output paths: proprietary FWR retargeting files for Faceware Retargeter and frame-accurate JSON animation-control data for custom character rigs, game engines, and digital-content-creation pipelines. The FWR route connects to Faceware’s Retargeter, while results can also be adjusted in Analyzer or Retargeter workflows. JSON supports custom pipelines, so teams are not limited to the proprietary retargeting route. The service supports common video formats; Faceware recommends 720p/60 RGB. Teams should choose another approach if they need real-time capture or general body tracking.
According to Faceware’s pricing page, prospective Portal customers should contact sales. That means teams need to discuss pricing directly before assessing fit against a budget. The cloud workflow may suit production groups that want to process existing footage in a browser and receive reviewable output without centering their workflow on live capture. Faceware lists email as a support channel. Choose Portal when prerecorded facial tracking and its FWR or JSON handoff match the production pipeline; look elsewhere when live output or broader motion capture is essential.
