ExtendSim review
A deep operations simulation platform for advanced modelers who need analytical range.

ExtendSim is a modular simulation application for modeling and analyzing business, industrial, engineering, logistics, healthcare, manufacturing, reliability, and other systems. It suits operations researchers, engineers, analysts, educators, and students who need graphical model building with reusable libraries, hierarchical submodels, databases, reporting, and custom interfaces. Its scope is broad within simulation, covering continuous, discrete-event, discrete-rate, reliability, agent-based, linear, and nonlinear approaches.
The published plans show a wide pricing ladder. ExtendSim Student costs $50 one-time and supports models of up to 75 blocks, with optimization, Scenario Manager, built-in databases, and custom blocks. ExtendSim CP Individual is $995 one-time for continuous process modeling, while DE Individual is $3,495 one-time and adds message-based discrete-event simulation plus CP capabilities. Pro Individual costs $4,995 one-time and adds discrete-rate simulation, reliability block diagramming, and advanced simulation technologies. Analysis RunTime Individual costs $495 one-time for running models without model building. Academic licenses cost $125 per station or $5,000 per server installation, and ExtendSim Cloud costs $10,000 per year for up to four concurrent instances. A 30-day free trial is available.
Its strongest fit is an organization that needs more than basic process diagrams: Scenario Manager, Analysis Manager, optimization, Monte Carlo, statistical analysis, multicore execution, and reliability reporting support detailed operational studies. Connectivity includes Excel, JMP, Minitab, Oracle, MySQL, Microsoft Access, SQL Server, ODBC, ADO, COM/ActiveX, FTP, and XML, while the HTTP API supports remote model loading, scenario runs, and result retrieval. The tradeoff is a primarily Windows desktop deployment, with web and API access concentrated in ExtendSim Cloud. Choose ExtendSim for advanced, customizable operations models; choose another category fit for multiplayer learning or assessment-led use cases.
ExtendSim pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Supports discrete-event, agent-based, continuous, reliability, and optimization models
- Connects with Excel, databases, statistical tools, APIs, and enterprise systems
- Adds scenario analysis, Monte Carlo, sensitivity analysis, and multicore runs
- Where it doesn't
- Primarily a Windows desktop application outside its cloud/API deployment
- No free plan; one-time editions range from $50 to $4,995
- Focused on operations modeling rather than multiplayer or assessment workflows
