EmberGen is a desktop visual-effects tool for creating real-time volumetric fire, smoke, explosions, and other pyro effects. JangaFX positions it for game studios and VFX artists who need rapid iteration and game-ready exports. Its node-based simulation graph, GPU particle simulation and rendering, looping simulations, and animated mesh and camera imports make it suited to artists working specifically on dynamic volumetric effects.

The published plans show a $300 one-time EmberGen Permanent license, which includes a permanent license and software updates for 12 months. Node-locked and floating licensing options are shown for that plan. EmberGen Maintenance costs $180 per year and provides access to software updates. A 30-day trial is available, while the product does not offer a free plan. The software runs on Windows and Linux, giving teams on those platforms a direct path to evaluation and purchase; macOS users should look elsewhere.

EmberGen’s strongest fit is its focused real-time pyro workflow. Fire, smoke, and explosion simulations can be paired with GPU particles, imported animated FBX or Alembic meshes, and imported FBX cameras. Outputs include EXR, PNG, and TGA images, image sequences, flipbooks, and OpenVDB volumes, supporting both rendered imagery and volume-based workflows. Choose EmberGen when fast iteration on volumetric effects is the priority. Teams seeking a broader visual-effects package, or requiring macOS support, should choose an alternative instead.

EmberGen pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Real-time GPU volumetric simulations for rapid pyro iteration
    • OpenVDB, image-sequence, flipbook, and sprite-sheet exports
    • FBX and Alembic mesh imports plus FBX camera import
  • Where it doesn't
    • No macOS support; available for Windows and Linux
    • The permanent license costs $300 before optional maintenance
    • Its focus is simulation rather than broad visual-effects coverage
